Pictured here is Thoth the Egyptian god of wisdom and writing. Egyptologists
had struggled for many years to translate the hiero-glyphic writing which
the Egyptians had used to communicate with. But, in 1822, the French linguist
Jean-Francois Champollion managed to decipher the Rosetta Stone, which
had been found by French soldiers in 1799 in the town of Rosetta, north-west
of Cairo. This is just one example of the benefits that translating has given our civilisation. |
